CHAPTER 22
TOL
It was still dark when Tol woke. Addy had finally fallen asleep, and sheâd draped herself around him. He remembered the panicked look in her eyes when she woke up from her nightmare, and her death grip as sheâd screamed his name. He nuzzled against her neck and breathed her in. Her usual piña colada scent had been replaced by the smell of his own shampoo.
She sighed in contentment when he kissed her neck.
How many more times would he wake up next to her?
His heart gave a painful lurch in his chest.
He and Addy had vowed that if the reserves were depleted and they hadnât found a way to be together, he would fulfill his duty to his people with Olivia.
The thought made him as sick as it had in the moment when he realized Olivia, and not Addy, was the Fount.
It wouldnât just be about blood marrying Olivia, either. In order for the bond to work without killing both of them, heâd have to find a way to destroy the love he still felt for Addy.
The blood marriage was a complete uniting of body and spirit, and if one of the parties was less than fully committed, it would be like an open, festering wound on both of their hearts. Olivia would know his misery, and those feelings would become hers a thousand-fold. Eventually, the pain of it would kill both of them.
The last thing Olivia deserved was to die because of him.
Olivia was a good person. She deserved better than to be eternally bound to a man who didnât want her. If it came down to it, it would be up to Tol to guard her life and heart in the same way she protected his.
He just didnât know how he was supposed to let Addy go.
Tol gently untangled himself from Addy and got out of bed. As he strapped on his prosthesis, he looked down and saw Addy was gripping her garden shears with the hand that hadnât been wrapped around him. He considered taking them away from her so she didnât hurt herself while she slept. Knowing Addy, it was more likely heâd get his face sliced open if he tried.
He went into the other room and paced around. He took another few unsuccessful shots at his speech. Then, he paced some more.
Each time he crossed the room, he glanced at the digital clock on his desk. As he watched the seconds and minutes slide away, he knew time was the one thing he didnât have.
